Guiding Principles for Business and Human Rights: Implementing the United Nations “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework. The Guiding Principles seek to provide an authoritative global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of adverse human rights impacts linked to business activity. The Guiding Principles are an important advancement in global governance because they are a creative and broad rethinking of how to evaluate the human rights performance or corporations. These Guiding Principles are grounded in recognition of: ○ States’ existing obligations to respect, protect and fulfill human rights and fundamental freedoms; ○ The role of business enterprises as specialized organs of society performing specialized functions, required to comply with all applicable laws and to respect human rights; ○ The need for rights and obligations to be matched to appropriate and effective remedies when breached.
